
It's a style of comedy that's not commercial, it's not for everyone. It's maybe the New Yorker equivalent of stand up comedy: a little smarter, certainly weirder and very much about live comedy and interacting with the audience.
If you go here you'll see all the up-and-coming alternative comedians, people like Demetri Martin. He'll show up and do a set on somebody's show to work out material. You pay at the door usually, it's cheap, $3-5. There's a show that's been here forever called Invite Them Up which is fairly famous, and they've done a live CD there with all the big shots performing, hosted by Eugene Mermon and Bobby Tisdale. It's not like if you go to the club that's mostly full of tourists in the audience where they need it alittle bit more mainstream. It's definitely a place where comedians come and just try crazy stuff. I also perform there about once a month. They have a screen set up, which is good for me, so I can project my cartoons.
