I love taking no-name clothes and tweaking them to make them my own, or make them appear designer. I get a weird satisfaction out of spending 40 dollars but appearing like I spent 4000. You just alter length, fit—add a touch. A great trick is quality buttons; they can turn H&M into YSL. For that you need to go to ArchAngel Antiques in the East Village. Never go without the piece. The man there guides you through an archive of buttons and won’t even begin without seeing the piece first. He informed me that actually most of the top designers these days cheap out on buttons, so most of the buttons he deals are vintage. He’s a fund of knowledge, very ‘off’ which I love, and the place is just so off the beaten path.
