Chances are, you know model Shakara Ledard. Whether you're flipping through the pages of your latest Victoria's Secret catalog, or flipping channels between MTV and BET where you can catch her dancing alongside Justin Timberlake in his "It's Like I Love You" video or Usher's "U Remind Me," she's the stunning beauty staring back at you. Featured in ad campaigns from L'Oreal to Levis, honored to be the very first black model to grace the pages of Singapore's Harpers Bazaar, the passionate Ledard may be best-known for striking sexy poses in Sports Illustrated's famed Swimsuit Issue for multiple years in a row. Boasting an exotic heritage—half Bahamian, half French—she first called New York home nine years ago. "It was important for me to find a place where I still feel connected to nature and serenity, and that's what I've found in my neighborhood in Battery Park," says Ledard.
More than a pretty face and knockout body, the busy Ledard lays claim to a savvy business sense and entrepreneurial streak, which she explored in her own designer clothing line, ROXS. Also a budding actress with a honeyed voice, Ledard has recently transformed her sultry look from print to film, starring in such movies as Raising Helen and the upcoming Wayans brothers flick, Behind the Smile. Whatever her latest project, Ledard's sense of humor and outgoing personality instantly light up the room. Fresh, funky and fearless, the fashion maven credits the bustling streets of New York City, which she strolls with her pug Milo, for helping inspire her own personal style and creativity. "My style is a mish mosh of things. A touch of edge, a new splash of feminine, and comfortable. I like to tap into the punk look that is alive in New York, especially on St. Marks Place." Oh, and whose video would she like to star in next? Given Ledard's many talents, her response doesn't surprise us in the least. "My own." Something tells us this is one New Yorker that can make it happen.
